[Movies] George Lucas Says Greedo Always Shot First
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 02.09.2012

George Lucas recently spoke about the "Han shot first" controversy, making changes to the Star Wars films, his thoughts on SOPA and more. Check out the highlights:

On the "Han shot first" debate and other controversies from fans: "Well, it's not a religious event. I hate to tell people that. It's a movie, just a movie. The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn't. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

"It's the same thing with Yoda. We tried to do Yoda in CGI in Episode I, but we just couldn't get it done in time. We couldn't get the technology to work, so we had to use the puppet, but the puppet really wasn't as good as the CGI. So when we did the reissue, we had to put the CGI back in, which was what it was meant to be. If you look at Blade Runner, it's been cut sixteen ways from Sunday and there are all kinds of different versions of it. Star Wars, there's basically one version — it just keeps getting improved a little bit as we move forward. … All art is technology and it improves every year. Whether it's on the stage or in music or in painting, there are technological answers that happen, and because movies are so technological, the advances become more obvious."

On whether changes were made to Episode I for the 3D release: "Changes are not unusual — I mean, most movies when they release them they make changes. But somehow, when I make the slightest change, everybody thinks it's the end of the world. That whole issue between filmmakers and the studios with the studios being able to change things without even letting the director of the movie know … I'm very much involved in that [so that's not happening here]. … My job is to try to make the best possible movie it can be — and the current version is the Blu-ray version. That's the one that's been made into 3D. But it's just a conversion. We haven't made any changes other than the 3D."

On Martin Scorsese's Hugo: "Yeah, I loved Hugo. I thought it was great. It's an interesting thing because I kind of resurrected the visual effects business, or the special effects business, but you know, [film subject Georges Melies] started it all. Visual effects aren't where it's at with dramas, but all the same problems that people think about exist, and he started the magic of movies."

On SOPA, PIPA and online piracy: "If we had an intelligent system for writing law, everybody would get together and write the best possible answer to that. I mean, putting the digital world up against the traditional world and saying it's one or the other is not a wise decision. Because what you're saying is, do you want movies to exist, or do you want everything to just be on the Internet and see cats watching television or something? Everybody wants movies, everybody wants television shows, and everybody wants digital media. It's just up to the government to sit down with both sides and write a reasonable bill. I think what they've got now is a flawed bill, which is not unusual, but that's all it is: sloppy legislation. Which has to be fixed. If we go much longer without [good] laws, most people won't pay attention [until] they arrest somebody who's making $50 million a year — and then you realize that there's hundreds of millions of dollars being siphoned off, and it does affect the music business, the film business, and eventually, the software business. Everybody's in this together."

On the status of Indiana Jones 5: "I'm supposed to be working on it right now, but I'm talking to you instead (Laughs)."

There is no motivation for Greedo to shoot first. He was taking him prisoner to get the bounty from Jabba. Shooting a sleazy bounty hunter with a gun trained on him, to save himself from Jabba, hardly classified him as a "cold-blooded killer" and that is not the objection fans have with the stupid change.

Your tag line is a lie sir!

Lucas NEVER said Han shot first. His intent with the scene was to keep it AMBIGUOUS!!!!

Mal shot first. Always.

When will this guy stop trying to "Jedi Mind Trick" fans of his movies? Thanks to his inane meddling, I criticize every aspect of the original trilogy: "Why are those stormtroopers just as easy to hurt or kill as the people with no battle armor?" Just an example of what I think about now when I see what USED TO BE my favorite movies! I respect the thoughtful, yet subtle, special effects improvements added to the original Star Trek series more every time I see them!!

Not even Lucasfilm can alter history

WHAT THE FUCK. "but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down." No. People wanted the goddamn original and it was retarded when he edited in the gunshot from Greedo.

And I can't believe he thinks that his edits improve the films. Nobody... fucking... likes them. He just constantly pisses his fans off.

More bullshit from George

OK, I'll be the one to do this. I and I suspect many others don't care that Mr. Lucas keeps changing his movies. Improve the movies, that's great. But I have a blu-ray & DVD of Blade Runner in its original U.S. form along with all of the redos. Just give us the original trilogy with full remastered video & sound and we'll be good. I bet many haters of the revisions won't hate it as much. People hate having things pushed on them.

Just my take. I have the DVDs with the laser disc transfers so I'm satisied.

he talks about 'millions being siphoned off' yet he milks his fan bases for hundreds of millions himself. Dick

"All art is technology and it improves every year. Whether it's on the stage or in music or in painting, there are technological answers that happen."

Bullshit, George. You don't see anyone rewriting "Les Miserables", revising the content of Beatles albums, or repainting "The Mona Lisa" or "Starry Night" just because time has passed and changes could possibly be made. Masterpieces should be left alone.

Why not just admit you want to milk these films and their audiences for all they're worth? People would at least respect you for being honest.

Leonardo da Vinci left the Mona Lisa incomplete, apparently he was going to add a moustache to her top lip.

When don't I improve on it, now where is my biro.

If Greedo shot first, why did Lucas use cgi to "improve" the scene. Han shot first!!!!

Posted By: Kanuk Jester (Guest)  on February 09, 2012 at 09:24 PM

George Lucas is a lying sonovabitch! Everyone that saw the pre recon version knows Han shot first. How fucking stupid does he think his fans are?

"All art is technology"- George Lucas

And now we finally have an ass-backwards philosophy to explain why Lucas made three CGI pornos call Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, and 3 and why he can't help but splice CGI money shots into the classic, non-retarded Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

"Posted By: Rufas2000 (Guest) on February 09, 2012 at 08:30 PM"

Well said. He could stick Jar Jar into his special versions for all I care, as long as he also released HD versions of the originals without the plot-altering changes and cheesy, tacked-on CGI.

It's simple Han shooting first adds to his character. He starts as a rogue that only cares for himself and Chewie. Through the course of the film he reforms and chooses Luke and Leia over paying his off Jabba. If he doesn't shoot first then why exactly is he a rogue?

Also, the reason people complain when Lucas makes changes and not when other do is because when a director's cut of anything else is put out the original still exists. It's not locked away.

Is it easy to buy the original theatrical versions of Star Wars 4-6 on DVD? Not really. Go to Amazon, and new copies are all very expensive. That's the problem.

The cheapest used copy of episode 4 is $25 with shipping.
